Perth’s 5 favorite CBD bars shared by Claire Fahie
A regular on Perth’s live music scene, jazz-blues-soul artist Claire Fahie has the expressive vocal ability to get audiences dancing as easily as she is immersing in all the thrills with her soulful performances.
A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and influenced by Aretha Franklin and Eva Cassidy, Claire performed a series of shows dedicated to her heroes, including soul queen Aretha Franklin and Queen Bey Beyonce.
Claire’s latest show is fun, whimsical and a bit frivolous as she brings in the party vibe covering a variety of jazz, funk and soul classics inspired by Scott Bradlee’s infamous Postmodern Jukebox.
His next stop is Jazz Party! In The Style Of Postmodern Jukebox at Jazz By The Beach, returning next weekend (August 27-28) to Perth’s Scarborough for two days of roaring jazz thrills that will transport music lovers to New Orleans’ French Quarter .
After hosting a successful inaugural event in 2021, this year Jazz By The Beach presents 50 musicians and 15 individual events at 10 venues across the Scarborough foreshore.
The entire program features world-class local musicians including Libby Hammer Trio, Adam Hall Trio, Russell Holmes and Simone Craddock, as well as festival founder and organizer Catherine Summers.
“We want to give people the experience of a New Orleans French Quarter with jazz spilling out onto the streets, and where visitors can easily walk from one jazz venue to another,” Catherine explains.
The festival offers a mix of free and paid events that will run from brunch to lunch, afternoon to sunset and evenings; there’s even a black tie event.
Here, Claire shares her favorite Perth CBD bars, perfect for catching up with friends or family, escaping down an alleyway to another world or just soaking up the live music vibe.
1: The Ellington Jazz Club
The Ellington Jazz Club transports you back in time from the moment you walk through its doors. Not only do they host live bands seven nights a week (often several shows a night, which I enjoy so much as a fellow performer), but the overall relationship between staff, performers and patrons is one, one big family. and I couldn’t love placing it more.
2: Way of the Wolves
Wolf Lane encompasses everything I love in a small bar. The quirky decor, the friendliness of the staff and the delicious cocktails. There’s something to be said for walking down an alley and finding hidden treasure. It makes me feel like I’m traveling the world on an exciting vacation.
3: Everything in government buildings
State Buildings. . . where to start!? For me, this building is a testament to history, class, and a true culinary “experience”. From Petition Bar to Wild Flower, you can’t go wrong booking at any of these gorgeous venues. I heard there was also a hidden jazz bar in the basement.
4: Pica Bar
Pica is the ideal place to meet up with family and friends. It is a local hub for Perth artists and right next to the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. Guests can relax outside in their spacious courtyard and watch the locals of Perth stroll around.
5: Joe’s Juice Point
Joe’s is one of those places where you can be sure to have a good time. If you’re up for a late night drink or chicken wings, this is the place for you! Loved by many musos and hotel workers as a late night hangout.
Jazz By The Beach takes place at various locations in Scarborough (Perth) on August 27 and 28.
