Burna Boy police escort shoots two at Lagos nightclub, arrested –

The Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad has arrested five police officers attached to singer Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy for attempted murder after shooting two amusement seekers, Irebami Lawrence and another identified simply like Tolu, at Club Cubana in Lagos on Wednesday, The PUNCH can confirm.

The development comes just a few years after the Lagos State Police Command said Burna Boy was wanted for allegedly sending armed thugs to assault and rob fellow musician, Abiye Jumbo aka Mr 2Kay.

According to a preliminary police report from the Bar Beach Police Division in Lagos State, trouble began around 4 a.m. on June 8, 2022 when the musician and five police escorts went to Club Cubana on the Victoria Island.

About four police officers waited outside while one of the officers identified as Inspector Ibrahim, who was in mufti, accompanied the Grammy-winning artist into the club.

According to multiple witness statements, the singer was in the VIP section with three women when he spotted another woman.

He allegedly told Ibrahim to invite the woman to join him.

However, the lady’s husband is said to have lambasted Burna Boy, insisting it was disrespectful for any man to make advances to his wife.

After a few minutes, Burna Boy reportedly made further advances to the woman.

This further infuriated her husband and friends who had gathered at the club and the matter quickly escalated.

“As things got heated, Ibrahim pulled out his service pistol and fired several times while Burna Boy laughed,” a senior police officer said.

In the aftermath, Lawrence, 27, was shot in the thigh while his friend, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet.

This caused a stir in the club.

Some people took out their phones to record what was happening, but the police started stealing and breaking the phones.

“They finally managed to get out of the club and also fired in the air to escape. While all of this happened, Cubana management did nothing about it. In the first place, they should not have allowed anyone to bring a gun into the club,” a senior police officer said. It has been learned that Burna Boy and his crew visited one of his properties at the Elegushi end of the Lekki-Epe highway and later Lekki Phase 1.

“Aware of what he had done, Burna Boy took the next flight without even informing his officers. He only video called them later to inform them that he had been to Spain. All of his police escorts have been arrested and are currently at the command headquarters,” a senior source at the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police said.

Sources close to the victims said the police were already trying to protect Burna Boy because of his status as the victims treated their injuries at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.

“They want to focus all the attention on the police and absolve Burna Boy of any blame. It is obvious that the police will not do anything about it, just like in the case of Mr. 2Kay, ”said a friend of the victims.

In a chat with The PUNCH, a brother of the victim, who identified himself only as Jide, said his brother underwent surgery to remove the bullet from his thigh on Friday.

Jide further said that Irebami, who is based in the United States, only arrived in Nigeria a week ago for a wedding when the unfortunate incident happened.

He also chastised the management of Club Cubana for not doing enough to prevent the situation, adding that the club’s management had not even contacted the family since the incident.

Jide added, “My brother and his friends came from the United States for a wedding when this thing happened. The annoying part was that Burna Boy was laughing even when this shoot was happening. He approved of what they did.

“One of the bullets grazed my brother’s friend’s head while my brother was shot in the thigh. He was operated on Friday.

“The Cuban people even deny that anything happened. They didn’t even contact us. It wasn’t until the morning of the shoot that a club official, White Lion, interacted with us.

Attempts to get a response from Burna Boy manager Mrs Bose Ogulu, who is also his mother, proved abortive as she did not return calls or a text message on Saturday.

Similarly, Chioma Nwachukwu, media consultant for Cubana, did not return calls on Saturday.

But Lagos State Police Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said the investigation was focused on officers.

Hundeyin also claimed that the police did not receive any complaints from any victims. They will explain why they had to shoot in the air and the result of their explanation during the investigation will determine the next steps to take.

“So it’s an internal thing with the police officers who were with him. Except you have news that Burna Boy was the one who shot; then we’ll have to investigate how he got the gun and all that. But what we have so far is that it was the police who fired.

“We deal with police officers internally for disciplinary matters. We have not received a report that anyone was hit by a bullet. If someone was hit by a bullet, anyone treating the person is supposed to have reported it, but we haven’t received any reports of this. The investigation is ongoing. »

In 2017, the Lagos State Police Command declared Burna Boy wanted for allegedly sending thugs to attack and rob fellow entertainer Mr. 2kay from his room at the Eko Hotel and Suites on the Victoria Island after performing in 2face’s ‘Buckwyld N Breathless’ concert. in the hotel.

They allegedly beat him and robbed him of a wristwatch, gold jewellery, telephones, among other valuables estimated at millions of naira, at gunpoint.

The case was later settled out of court between Burna Boy and Mr. 2Kay and crooner Ye escaped criminal prosecution.
