Britain’s top chefs, restaurants and bars come to Freight Island for a weekend
Kantina – a weekend food and drink concept that launched last year – is back for 2022, with national guest chefs, restaurants and bars teaming up with existing Escape to Freight Island for a unique, limited and unique collaboration.
The special weekend is all about celebrating the joy of eating and drinking, in all its depth and diversity.
The first wave of names and collaborations has now been revealed, with more to follow.
Brad Carter’s One Star Döner Bar will partner with Michelin-starred chef Tom Brown, who founded Cornerstone in London, alongside famed Birmingham independent food consultant Lap-fai Lee.
Mary-Ellen McTague, of Creameries in Chorlton, will be paired with one of Sheffield’s best, Bench founders Ronnie Aronica and Jack Wakelin.
Famous for her Southeast Asian cuisine, Pippa Middlehurst – aka “Pippy Eats” – will return to Kantina for a follow-up collaboration with Mi & Pho.
Newest charcoal-grilled and fried chicken marketer, Lucky Foot, will partner with Budgie Montoya who champions Filipino cuisine with his restaurant Sarap in London.
Madre’s finest tacos will be partnered with AngloThai co-founder and chef John Chantarasak.
And Escape to Freight Island’s brilliant new collaborative concept, Carnival, will be led by award-winning chef, butcher, restaurateur and food writer Richard Turner (ex-Hawksmoor).
Additionally, customers can expect an exciting collaboration where Kantina will present “Sous Do Ray’s”, with sous chefs from some of the country’s most famous restaurants offering their own take on Voodoo Ray’s pizzas.
A very special and limited supper club will be presented by Luke French, chef and owner of the famous JÖRO in Sheffield, who holds 3 AA rosettes and is Michelin Guide advised.
JÖRO is known for combining local produce with Asian influences, with Luke French recognized as part of a new generation of modern British chefs who are pushing culinary boundaries.
AAnother collaboration will see Soho House, soon to open a new club in Manchester, take over and curate Escape to Freight Island’s sky bar at The Jane Eyre, as well as a natural wine bar by Jack Wakelin (Bench, Sheffield ).
For the sweet tooth, a selection from Happy Endings, famous for its ice cream sandwiches, will be available alongside offerings from Gooey and Batard.
The venue will also host a dynamic slate of accompanying entertainment, live DJ performances, satellite events and more throughout the weekend.
Kantina will be hosted at Escape to Freight Island on Friday, June 10 (4 p.m. to 1 a.m.), Saturday, June 11 (12 p.m. to 1 a.m.), and Sunday, June 12 (12 p.m. to 9 p.m.).
