Partygoers hit the city on Saturday night ahead of the introduction of Plan B curbs, amid warnings tougher restrictions may be needed soon.

Some revelers have been pictured wearing Christmas hats and sweaters as they made their way to clubs and bars in Manchester and Newcastle.

The British made the most of the holiday season after heavy restrictions last year – but it comes as experts say social contacts should be curtailed amid fears over the new Omicron variant.

Under Plan B restrictions, vaccine passports or negative lateral flow tests will be required to enter clubs and other large venues from Wednesday.

People are advised to work from home starting tomorrow, while face masks will be mandatory in most interior spaces, although hospitality is exempt.

Boris Johnson would resist calls for Plan C, which could limit the number of visitors to care homes and restart table service in pubs.

Meanwhile, the government is reportedly considering producing a Plan D, which could allow pubs and restaurants to serve only outdoors, reports The Mirror.

This comes from the fact that it is confirmed that there are now hospital patients infected with the Omicron variant.

Nadhim Zahawi revealed the news this morning but did not say whether infection was the main reason for their hospitalization or what their vaccination status was.

Speaking about Omicron on Sky News’ Trevor Phillips On Sunday, he said: “We know it’s highly contagious, so the doubling rate is between two and three days.

“Very quickly the Omicron will be the dominant variant in the UK and possibly the rest of the world.

“We’ve seen this movie before; we saw it with the Kent (Alpha) then Delta variant. ‘

Meanwhile, the UK Health Security Agency’s chief medical adviser has warned that a large wave of infections at Omicron is “inevitable”.

Dr Susan Hopkins said people will need to reduce social contact as much as possible, although more research is needed to determine how dangerous Omicron actually is.

She told the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show: “I think the restrictions announced by the government are reasonable.

“I think we may have to go beyond them. But we will have to carefully monitor what happens with the hospitalizations.

Asked about the existence of a Plan C document, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said: “Not to my knowledge.

“As a responsible government, of course, you would expect that we… we already have a range of options in terms of actions we can take to mitigate the growth of any variant or virus.

“But there are no plans to go further at this time.”
